MAKO

MAKO

Mako Charque (Shark? Charque? See what I did there) was stubborn guy - and his parents saw him as a disappointment. His parents always wanted him to become a surfer just like them, but he always refused. He claims he sucked at it... which he did. One day, Mako lost his parents in a Shark attack, and that event finally ignited his ambition to become a pro-surfer; however, he found himself scared of the ocean. There, he would be prone to shark attacks! Mako decides the next best thing is skateboarding... but he sucks at that too, thus, continuing to be a disappointment to his deceased parents.

PROJECT BRIEF

Students had the opportunity to dive into 3D for the first time. We had to create a narrative of a character, then using a 3D program, bring the narrative and the character to life in a short animation.

PROCESS

The project stated that we had to do a "simple character design…" but I wanted to see what all I could do in 3D - especially with it being my first time using the software! I also knew I wanted to do something with sharks. I have always loved the way people tend to humanize sharks, and I wanted to do something with that as well. I worked on crafting a narrative of a shark boy who was afraid of the ocean because I thought it would be funny. I then shifted to research with character inspiration and mood inspiration.

After looking at some character inspiration, I began sketching out the little dude, and working on some character turn-arounds as well! I made sure to keep him somewhat simple since this was my first time working in a 3D program.

I quickly realized that I had no idea where to begin on 3D modeling, and watched a bunch of hour long tutorials on how to get started! After my research, I went ahead and tried it out on my own. I ended up crashing and burning because I made the mesh too heavy for the armature, which resulted in me starting over… I didn't mind though. I really loved the character I made, so I decided I wouldn't let something like that stop me! I quickly picked back up with the modeling, and he was complete!

I went ahead and started working on the environment. I wanted to make things easier for me, So I used some images of graffiti that I took in New York and use nodes to display it as a texture on some plane meshes. These mimicked street walls! After I did that, I went ahead and modeled his skateboard, and shipped it all into After effects for compositing. There, I was able to simulate Ben-Day dots and dust using particle engines so that I could give the animation some more life.
